My dog is really great, except for _________ [fill in the blank]
I hear this from clients and students all the time.
Got a new puppy? Trouble with pulling, jumping, chewing or barking? I'm a professional dog trainer who uses science based, dog-friendly methods to help you and your dog develop into the happy, productive pair you want to be. When appropriate I also employ my well-behaved canine assistants (Doshi, Tahiti and Cocoa). Sometimes dogs have an easier time learning from a well-behaved older dog.
Beginning with the initial consultation, we offer private sessions, day training and group classes to help you with your specific dog training needs.
Initial Consultation
The initial consultation lasts between 60-90 minutes, and goes through all of the dog's history as well as the family situation. The initial consultation lays the ground work for all future training sessions by identifying the goals for the dog and handlers, and is used to create a training program to meet and exceed these goals. Cost for the initial consultation is $195.
Private Sessions
Ideal for addressing specific issues, private sessions are held in your home or at an agreed upon park or public place, and are customized for your training priorities. Each session is 50 min long and is suitable for dogs of all ages. The rate for private sessions is $125, and sessions are scheduled for your convenience. For most clients, I meet with the owner and dog 3 to 6 times (usually once a week). The owner and dog have homework each week to develop the relationship between them, build trust and learn basic manners.
Day Training
We offer two variables for day training - training in your home, or training in my home. Day training slots are extremely limited and dogs requesting day training must have an in-home consultation prior to be accepted into the program. For training in your home, I do a specialized type of training where I come into your home on a daily basis and work with your dog there. These sessions include a walk or outing of some kind. Depending on the issues involved, the program will last between 2 and 4 weeks, five days a week.
I also take client dogs into my home on a daily basis to work with my dogs (I have three). Since this program involves my personal dogs, I am very selective about what dogs I take into this program. I have two excellent, stable adult dogs and one 1.5 year old who's good but still learning to be calm, and maintaining a balance where the client dog can progress is important. I only take one client dog into my home at a time. This program also lasts between 2 and 4 weeks, five days a week.
For either of the day training programs, the owner has to be involved in the training so that the learning can be transferred. It's important for both the dog and the owner to learn - otherwise, the training doesn't tend to "stick". I usually recommend one session a week with the handler and dog while the program is ongoing, with follow-up sessions after that if necessary.
To be considered for the day training programs, an initial consultation must be completed for the rate of $195 per hour. Pricing for day training programs is dependent upon the priorities identified by the owner, the home location and the initial consultation.
Group Classes
With the closing of the Good Dog DC studio in the spring of 2016, I am only teaching group classes for the Humane Rescue Alliance (formerly the Washington Animal Rescue League) at 71 Oglethorpe Street NW, Washington, DC 20011. HRA's training schedule may be found here, or you may contact HRA at 202-375-7744 to learn more about classes.
Special Note
I am dedicated to doing my best for the dogs under my care, and I believe in the power of positive training. If you are unable to afford to pay current rates but are committed to investing your time and effort in training your dog, please contact me for information on paying on a sliding scale.
